A very popular place for bathers and swimmers when the Irish weather permits.The Martello tower in the background was constructed in1804 by the British as a garrison to repel a threatened invasion by Napoleon Bonaparte and his French troops. In the background the twin chimney stacks of Poolbeg power station in Ringsend rise up, a landmark very familiar to all Dubliners.
